Who is entitled to maternity leave?

Female employees. In addition to annual leave, as a consequence of pregnancy, a female employee has the right to a period of sixty working days leave from work on full wages.

 

What should an employee do to get maternity leave?

A female employee has to apply for maternity leave at an appropriate time, preferably when delivery is approaching. If requested by the employer a female employee may produce a certificate as to her medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner or midwife.

 

What about job security after maternity leave – can a woman lose her job because of pregnancy?

A female employee cannot lose her job due to pregnancy; in case it happens the matter should be reported to the district labour officer. If the female employee does not receive the required help from the labour officer, she can report the matter to the Labour Commissioner who is based in Kampala at the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development.

 

Do you offer breastfeeding leave/time off for breast feeding?

Breastfeeding leave is not offered in Uganda as distinct from maternity leave. However, some employers do provide breast feeding rooms or leave without being required to do so by law.
